I had been a slumbering oaf for quite sometime. That's not to say that I haven't cared about the state of our country, but more so that I haven't cared enough to do something about it. I had been caught up in the hullabaloo of life -- from working too much, to working out too much, to partying too much.
I had told my husband that I planned to
not vote because both of the candidates seemed to be equally horrible. I won't go into details on this, but anyone that fed you the line "Lessor of Two Evils" was right on the money. But more so Romney = Obama = Evil.
My husband gave me a thorough shake down, telling me that I need to exercise my right to vote. I honestly felt like vomitting. I didn't want to vote for either of them and would feel ill if I did.
That same day I went to lunch with my mom, dad & sister. My sister showed up about ten minutes late because she said she couldn't find a parking spot.
"Dude, I just found a spot like 10 minutes ago", I said to her.
"Dude Gary Johnson's rally just started", she said back.
I knew that name -- yes I saw some yard signs in my hometown for Gary Johnson.
Nothing else was said & we all ordered our food & chatted about other trivial things -- like the chicken my dad had just acquired that was in a box in his truck. Yes, a live chicken. Actually, a pet chicken to be more precise.
After the bill was paid we went our seperate ways. Dad and my sister decided to go to the Johnson rally to pick up some yard signs. I had some mail to take to the post office, so I went there.
All the while I stood in line at the P.O. all I could think about was that rally. I
felt like I needed to be there, like I should at the very
least check it out and see what it was about.
So I jumped back in my car, parked in the boondocks, and walked to the Cla-zel (an old movie theater turned into a dance club). I got there just before Gary was being introduced and saw that the place was pretty full.
When Gary was introduced the crowd applauded, like at any political rally. But, everyone seemed very respectful & attentive. Gary went onto address the crowd and talked about the situation the United States is in, and how Libertarian ideals can change it -- less Goverment, more Freedom.
End the war on drugs, legalize marijuana.
Stop interventionism -- pull our troops out of the bazillion international bases they are at.
Reduce tax burdens on everyone by installing a FairTax (consumption tax)
Reform & phase out primary public education as the system is dying (I honestly think I learned more from my dad than I did from any teacher in k-12).
After he spoke I felt different. I felt like my eyes were opening. I felt a flood of questions entering my brain that had never dwelt there before.
-Why should I pay into Medicare & Social Security when those programs are completely unsustainable and have been drained by internal governmental borrowing?
-Why is marijuana illegal when it is a less harmful substance than alcohol & tobacco?
-Why is our military interjected into international affairs like we are the Big Brother of the world?
-Why should I pay a school district tax if I never have kids?
So after the rally I immediately went home & did more research about the Libertarian Party, and along the way also found Ron Paul. I watched the Republic National Convention on YouTube and literally started crying like a fool.
Ignorance is definitely bliss. Once you are awakened, the world is quite different.
As I seek the facts, I will share them & let you decide on your own if you are ready to ask more questions.
